Overview
Client Matters numbers play a pivotal role in organizing and managing legal work. In Harvey, they help streamline task tracking, ensure accurate records, and improve overall workflow efficiency.
Note: Workspace admins can enable or disable Client Matters numbers at the workspace level. If enabled, you may be required to associate your queries with a Client Matters number before proceeding.
How Client Matters Work
Client Matters numbers (CM#s) in Harvey ensure your work stays organized and aligned with specific client projects. Here’s how they function across the platform:
- CM# Persistence: Once you select a CM#, it remains active across all Harvey tools until you either change it or log out of Harvey.
- Vaults: When creating a new vault, you may enter a new CM#. Additionally, depending on your admin-managed workspace configuration, you may be able to or required to associate a CM# with each vault. Vaults created via iManage sync will automatically have the CM# applied from the iManage workspace, and the CM# can't be changed at vault creation.
Note: If your firm has integrated Harvey with your ethical walls provider, the client matter you attach also controls who can access the work. Depending on your firms’ ethical wall configuration, you may be required to attach a client matter to a resource before sharing. Learn more in Ethical Walls in Harvey.
Assigning Client Matters
Assign a Client Matter to a Thread
You can associate a client matter with a thread. If the matter has an ethical wall, the wall follows the matter into the thread under your workspace's walls policy.
- Navigate to the Client matter dropdown menu above the composer.

- Locate and select the relevant CM# from the dropdown.
- Some configurations allow you to create new client matter numbers in Harvey. Type a new CM# in the dropdown and select Create.
- Note: If your admins have turned on ‘disallowed’ CM#, you will be presented with the below error and unable to use that CM#.
- The selected CM# will remain active across all Harvey tools (e.g., Assistant, Translation, Vault) until you update it.
Assign a Client Matter to a Playbook
You can associate a client matter with a Playbook. If the matter has an ethical wall, the wall follows the matter into the Playbook under your workspace's walls policy. You need edit access to a Playbook to assign a client matter.

- Go to Library → Playbooks and select a Playbook.
- Select Edit, then select Client Matter from the top toolbar.
- Choose your client matter from the dropdown list.
- Select Save.
Assign a Client Matter to a Review Table
You can associate a client matter with a review table. If the matter has an ethical wall, the wall follows the matter into the review table under your workspace's walls policy. You need edit access to a review table to assign a client matter.

- Open the review table.
- Select Client Matter from the top toolbar.
- Choose your client matter from the dropdown list.
- Select Save.
Assign a Client Matter to a Vault
You can associate a client matter with a Vault. If the matter has an ethical wall, the wall follows the matter into the Vault under your workspace's walls policy. You need edit access to a Vault to assign a client matter.

- Create a new Vault.
- In the creation flow, choose the relevant Client Matter from the CM# picker.
- Finish creating the Vault.
Note: When you create a vault by syncing with iManage, Harvey applies the client matter associated with that iManage source automatically. The Client Matter field on the vault will display the inherited matter and cannot be edited at vault creation. This keeps the vault aligned with the matter in the system of record.
Viewing Client Matters Data
Note: Depending on your workspace configuration, you may have the ability to add or edit CM# across your entire workspace. If this functionality is not available, contact your workspace admin for details.
You can view and edit only the CM#s you have created. Workspace admins have full visibility and editing access across all CM#s, regardless of origin. Deleted entries are included in the list and can be restored if needed—ensuring nothing slips through the cracks.
