What’s New

When you upload an Excel spreadsheet to a thread, Harvey can now view and analyze the formula behind each number, not just the number itself.

You can now ask Harvey to:

  • Explain how a number was calculated, step by step, back to the inputs that feed it
  • Check whether a summary tab matches the detail tabs behind it
  • Do the math itself, including totals, counts, averages, rankings, and filters, across one tab or several
  • Find where a term, figure, or reviewer comment appears anywhere in the workbook
  • Understand references, so you don't need to use cell addresses

Why It Matters

Previously, Harvey read Excel files as flattened text, much like a PDF of a spreadsheet; it could report a cell's value but not the formula behind it. Because Harvey now sees the formulas too, it can provide insights into how a figure was derived, whether totals reconcile across tabs, and where a number doesn't add up.

How To Use

  1. Open a thread and upload one or more Excel or CSV files, or add them from a vault
  2. Ask your question in plain language, for example:
    • "How is the total damages figure calculated, and what feeds into it?"
    • "Reconcile the totals on the Summary tab against the detail tabs."
    • "Do the totals in this fee tracker match the hours and rates?"
  3. [Optional] Select a citation in Harvey's answer to jump to those cells in the spreadsheet.

FAQs

Q: What file types are supported?

Harvey supports Excel (.xlsx and .xls) and CSV files. Macro-enabled (.xlsm) and binary (.xlsb) workbooks are not supported. For older .xls files, Harvey reads values only, so re-save them as .xlsx for full support.
