Overview
Email Harvey enables users to interact with Harvey Assistant directly from their inbox. Instead of navigating to the web app, users can send a query via email and receive a response in the same thread.
This allows legal professionals to stay in their existing workflows—especially when working on the go—while still leveraging Harvey’s capabilities.
Email threads are fully integrated with Harvey. Conversations can be resumed in the web app for deeper analysis, document workflows, or iterative drafting.
How it works (at a glance)
- Send an email to Harvey with your request
- Harvey email addresses vary based on region:
- US: ask@us.harvey.ai
- EU: ask@eu.harvey.ai
- AU: ask@au.harvey.ai
- Harvey processes the email and generates a response
- The response is returned to your inbox
- Continue via email or transition to the web app
Key behaviors to know
Admin-controlled access
- Email Harvey must be enabled by workspace admins
- Only authorized users can submit queries

Identity verification
- Emails are authenticated to your Harvey account using your primary email address
- If no match is found, the request is rejected
Group email behavior
- Responses are sent only to the original sender (not the full thread)
Data handling & retention
- Email content becomes part of your Harvey workspace data
- Retention follows workspace policies in Harvey
- Your email inbox retention is separate and not controlled by Harvey
Matter assignment
- A client matter number (CM#) can be attached to the email header to assign the thread to a matter.
- If your workspace requires CM# inclusion, Harvey will return an error message if the CM# is missing.

When to Use Email Harvey vs. the Web App
Email Harvey is designed for speed and mobility. It's the right tool when:
- You're working on the go or from a mobile device
- You need to draft, edit, or generate a document without opening a browser
- Your access to the Harvey web app is limited or unavailable
When your work requires Harvey’s full capabilities, switch to the web app.
How to Use
Send a query
- Compose a new email
- Address it to your regional Harvey email
- Write your query (include context for best results)
- Send
Review and iterate
- Read Harvey’s response in your inbox
- Reply in the same thread to ask follow-up questions
Continue in Harvey (optional)
- Open the thread in the Harvey web app for:
- More complex queries
- Document-based workflows
- Iterative drafting
Tip: Use email for speed and triage. Move to the web app for deeper, structured work.
Troubleshooting
- Harvey didn’t respond.
- Confirm the feature is enabled in your workspace
- Verify you used your registered (primary) email address
- Check that you used the correct regional email address
- Ensure your email passed authentication checks (SPF/DKIM/DMARC)
- I received a rejection or bounce.
- Your email may have been rejected because:
- Your email address is not associated with a Harvey account
- Your workspace does not have Email Harvey enabled
- Your email failed authentication or security checks
Important: Harvey only processes requests from verified, authorized users.
- I received an error response.
- Your request may not be supported yet. Email Harvey currently does not support:
- Queries over Vaults
- Attaching knowledge sources
- Triggering workflows or asynchronous tasks
- Sending outputs to other recipients
- Complex, multi-step queries
- Response quality is low or incomplete.
- Make your query more specific
- Break complex requests into smaller steps
- Include context (audience, format, goal)
- I expected others to receive the response.
- Harvey replies only to the original sender in group threads
- Forward or share the response after reviewing
- I can’t find my thread in Harvey.
- Check your workspace retention window
Note: Email and Harvey retention operate independently; a thread may exist in email but not in Harvey (or vice versa).
Attachments or data concerns
How attachments are handled
- Attachments are securely uploaded to Harvey storage
- They are treated the same as files uploaded via the web app
- Retention follows workspace policies
Important (Early Access):
- During Early Access, full responses (including sensitive content) may appear in email
- Future versions may limit sensitive content in email responses and require viewing in Harvey
Security and privacy considerations
- Emails are processed through AWS SES and securely handled
- All inbound emails must pass authentication and security checks
- Only verified users can submit queries
- All activity is logged for audit purposes
- Data is deleted from AWS infrastructure after processing in line with retention policies
Email Harvey is designed to function like a secure API endpoint, not an open inbox, ensuring controlled, auditable access to Harvey.
