Tagging a Space to Client Matter

Overview

You can now tag a space to a client matter, allowing you to track and review spaces based on the client matter assigned to them.

If your workspace has an ethical walls integration enabled in Harvey, the client matter tag will also enforce the wall on the space: only users cleared for that client matter can open it, only resources with the same client matter tag can be added, and any resources tagged to a different client matter are hidden.

Key Features

• One matter per space: Tag, change, or clear a space's matter.
• Automatic query matter inheritance: Queries in a tagged space carry its client matter automatically. If a space does not have a client matter tagged to it, you can still pick a client matter when querying.
• Wall enforcement on spaces: In ethical walls workspaces, a space's matter governs who can open it, what can be added, and what stays visible.

How to Use

Tagging a Space to a Client Matter (Users)

1. At the top of the space, select Client matter.
2. Choose a client matter for the space. Note that you won’t be able to add a client matter if it’s already been applied to another space.

After adding the client matter, any future queries within the space will automatically carry the client matter. Space admins can change or clear the matter at any time.

Enforcing Ethical Walls in A Space (Admins)

Ethical walls must be enabled in your workspace before they can be enforced in a Space. Once enabled, enforcement behavior will vary based on which ethical wall settings are toggled on. Refer to Harvey’s Ethical Walls documentation for more details on how enforcement works.

Notes & Limitations

• No cross-workspace enforcement. Your firm’s ethical walls apply to your own users only. External co-counsel and client guests are governed by their own workspace, and they cannot view client matter tags in your Space.
• Space retention is unaffected. Vault retention tied to a client matter operates independently of space retention.

FAQs

Q: Do I have to enable ethical walls to tag a space?
No. Tagging works on its own as a governance and analytics label. Enforcement applies only in workspaces that have ethical walls turned on.

Q: What if my firm requires client matters for all queries?
Users must enter a client matter to run a query within the space. The space itself does not require a matter.

Q: What happens if we turn enforcement off?
Hidden content becomes visible again and blocked members regain access. Filtering happens at read time, so toggling it changes nothing in stored data.
