Vault Custom Fields
Add your own document types and custom tags to files in Vault, so you can organize and filter documents to match your matters and existing systems.
What's Coming
Vault will support custom file tagging, so teams can organize document sets in ways that reflect how they actually work. Instead of relying only on Harvey's default document type classifications, users will be able to add their own document type values, create custom metadata tags (like jurisdiction, practice area, or matter phase), and use those tags to filter files in the Vault file explorer.

Custom document types
Add your own document types — type a new value (or paste a list) in the Document Type column to create types beyond Harvey's built-in list (e.g., "Witness Statement," "Subscription Document," "Convertible Loan Agreement"). Custom values sit alongside Harvey's AI-inferred classifications.
Filter before you run — filter the file explorer by document type to narrow a vault down before running a query or review (e.g., filter to just witness statements ahead of a litigation review).
Manage values centrally — rename a value from the "Manage custom document tags" dialog and it propagates to every file it's on; deleting a value removes it from every file.
Create your own metadata columns — build columns beyond document type (short-text label, Person, or Date; single- or multi-choice) from the file side panel or table header, assign values per file or in bulk, and filter on them in the file explorer.
Permission-aware — creating new tag values requires Full Access or Owner on the vault; Edit users can apply existing values; view-only users see tags read-only. All tag changes are captured in the workspace audit log.
FAQs
Q: Can I bulk-import my firm's existing tags from Relativity, Kira, or iManage?
A: Not yet — bulk tag ingestion from external tools requires a Harvey-assisted migration; there's no self-serve CSV import. Reach out to your Harvey team about migrating an existing taxonomy.
Q: Do tags carry over if I move a file to a different vault?
A: No. Tags are vault-specific, so a file loses its tags if it's moved to another vault. Tag values also aren't shared across vaults or the workspace yet.
Q: Will Harvey automatically apply custom tags to new documents?
A: Not in this release. Document type remains Harvey's AI-inferred classification, but custom tags are applied manually.
Q: Can I use tags to scope an Assistant or agent query?
A: Not at launch. Tags filter files in the Vault file explorer only. Query-time tag filtering is a stated goal but isn't part of the current milestones.
