Record and Transcribe Audio in Harvey

Turn a recording into an editable, searchable Word transcript by uploading an audio file in Assistant or Vault, or by recording live in the Harvey mobile app.

Last updated: Aug 31, 2026

Overview

Harvey can turn a recorded conversation into a Word (.docx) transcript with speaker labels and timestamps. You can create a transcript two ways:

  • Upload an existing audio file in an Assistant conversation or to a Vault on the web app.
  • Record a conversation directly in the Harvey mobile app.

Once created, the transcript is fully searchable, editable, and queryable, so you can turn a raw recording from a deposition, client interview, hearing, or call into usable text without leaving Harvey.

Each line in the transcript will follow this format:

[00:01:32] Speaker 1: Hello there.

[00:01:35] Speaker 2: Hello, nice to see you.

Before You Get Started

  • File length: Files over 2 hours long cannot be transcribed and will show an error.
  • Recording length: Recordings over 2 hours long cannot be transcribed. Harvey alerts you as you approach the recording limit.
  • Language: Language is auto-detected. If a recording is not in a supported language or contains significant background noise, accuracy may be lower.

Transcribe an Existing Audio File

Upload an audio file directly in an Assistant conversation or to Vault, and Harvey transcribes it automatically. Supported audio file types include: M4A, MP3, WAV, WebM, FLAC and OGG.

Record & Transcribe Conversations on Mobile

Use the audio transcription tool in the Harvey mobile app to capture and review long conversations such as meetings or interviews.

Once the recording ends, it’s converted into a speaker-labeled transcript that is saved to Vault as a .docx file. You can keep recording while your device is locked or you are using other apps.

To record and transcribe audio on mobile:

  1. In the Assistant tab, select Record & transcribe.
  2. Review and acknowledge the recording consent notice.
    1. If Harvey’s audio consent feature has been enabled by your workspace admin, you’ll also be prompted to raise your device volume until you hear the “Recording in progress” notice play aloud.
  3. Harvey will begin recording. While a recording is in progress, you can pause it or collapse the tab and keep working elsewhere in Harvey while recording continues in the background.
  4. To end the recording, select Finish.
  5. In the Transcript name field, edit the name if needed.
  6. In the Saving to field, select Choose vault, then select the Vault where you want the transcript saved.
    1. To create a new Vault instead, select the + button in the Save to vault screen.
  7. Select Save.

After you save, the transcript uploads to Vault, where you can view it as a .docx file. Your transcript may take a few minutes to process before it can be viewed in Vault.

Editing a Transcript

There are two ways to correct a transcript, such as renaming a speaker label or fixing an inaccuracy:

  • Ask Assistant. In an Assistant thread in the web app, request the change in plain language. For example, "Rename Speaker 2 to 'Opposing Counsel' throughout the transcript."
  • Edit in the Word editor side panel. Open the transcript in the web app and make corrections directly in the document, the same way you would edit any Word file in Harvey.

Querying a Transcript

Once the transcript is generated, you can query it like any other document: ask for a summary, pull key admissions, extract action items, or run it as part of a larger review. In Vault, the transcript is available to query alongside the rest of your documents.
