iManage Search

Search your iManage content from a Harvey thread or the Harvey for Word add-in.

Last updated: Sep 2, 2026

Overview

iManage Search lets you find documents across your iManage environment directly in Harvey. Describe what you're looking for in your own words, and Harvey plans and runs a search across your iManage repository, returning an answer with citations linking back to the source documents in iManage.

Documents stay in iManage. Files Harvey references while answering a question are scoped to that conversation and don't enter your broader Harvey workspace. To bring documents into a Vault for ongoing work, use the iManage integration to import them separately.

Getting Access

iManage Search requires the underlying iManage integration to already be configured for your workspace.

Once enabled, admins can grant users permission to Use iManage Search within Command Center → Users & permissions → Roles. See Access Control & Permission Management for more information.

Use iManage as a Source in Harvey

To allow Harvey to search iManage, add it as a source to your Harvey query.

The Sources panel open in Harvey, with iManage selected as a source.

In the Harvey Web App

  1. Open a new Harvey thread.
  2. Select Sources, then select iManage.
  3. Sign in to iManage if prompted.
  4. Enter your query. Harvey shows its progress in the thinking states, including the search terms it's using.
  5. Review the answer. Citations open the source document in iManage in a new tab.

In the Harvey for Word Add-In

  1. Open the Harvey for Word add-in in the document.
  2. Select Sources, then select iManage.
  3. Sign in to iManage if prompted.
  4. Ask your question, or run a comparison against the open document.
  5. Insert, compare, or save results back to iManage.

Harvey searches iManage content the same way whether or not a client matter is selected: by default, it searches the entire DMS corpus you have access to. To scope a search, you can include instructions in your prompt:

  • Client or matter number: "Search Client Matter 12345.54321 for..."
  • Folder or workspace: "Search the Diligence folder for..."
  • Author: "Find documents by [name] about..."
  • Exact phrase: Put the phrase in quotes, e.g. "material adverse effect".

Permissions and Security

You can only find documents you can already see in iManage: a walled document doesn't appear in results unless you have access to the underlying matter. This holds across threads in Harvey and the Word add-in.

For more admin-specific information on how the iManage integration is set up and secured, see Enable the iManage Integration for Your Workspace.

Notes & Limitations

  • Each iManage query returns up to a 50 documents in its results. For an exhaustive sweep, narrow your scope by matter, folder, date range, or counterparty, or split the request into multiple focused queries.
  • Search results aren't version-aware, so a redline may rank above the final executed version. To avoid this, exclude drafts from your query, for example by asking Harvey to skip titles that contain "DRAFT.”
  • Results are point-in-time: changes made in iManage after a thread is created aren't reflected automatically, so re-run the search to pick up the current state.
